The eight months’ long Open Software Challenge Nepal (OSCN) 2009 concluded on August 8, 2009 amidst heavy presence of participants, OSCN volunteers, honorable guests and media personnel at Shanker Hotel, Lazimpat. OSCN 2009 attracted 83 projects out of which 12 made it to the grand finale.
The closing ceremony started in a grand style with a welcome speech by Shankar Sharma, OSCN coordinator. The welcome speech was followed by a series of presentations from 12 different finalists. After these presentations, Dr. Rudra Pandey, COO Verisk Health Inc., USA, the chief guest Mr. Shankar Pokharel and Mr. Shashidhar Ram Joshi, HOD – Electronics & Communication, IOE, gave their views on open source movement in Nepal and highlighted the points which could help Nepal move ahead in the field of open source.
However, the highlight of the event was the prize distribution ceremony. The first prize winner walked away with Rs 100,000 along with a trophy while the second and third prize winners walked away with Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 25,000 respectively. While a separate cash prize of 30,000 along with a trophy was presented to the best designer project. The iconic Hari Bansha Acharya and Madan Krishna Shrestha along with Chief Guest for the event, Honorable Minister for Information and Communications, Mr. Shankar Pokharel and COO Verisk Health Inc., USA Dr. Rudra Pandey felicitated the winners by presenting them with tokens and prize money.
About OSCN 2009:
OSCN 2009 is the first of its kind of event organized in Nepal. The idea of OSCN oozed with a vision to promote a platform by rewarding the innovative software developers in Nepal. With this event, the organizing committee expects to promote open source movement in Nepal. This event was jointly organized by D2HawkeyeServices Pvt. Ltd. and Tribhuvan University, Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk. OSCN was hosted in D2Labs.org and has been greatly supported by FOSS Nepal since Jan-05-2009.
